Possibly the smartest choice for a working cowboy, a dry cotton rope is the best "bang for your buck" meaning that it will outlast any poly or nylon rope. Making a living on cowboy wages can be really tight sometimes, so make sure and invest in a rope that'll last as long as possible. I carried cotton ropes for most of my life.
Once they're broke in, you can treat them in many different ways. I prefer to paint or linseed oil them. Painting them will add some weight and some body, and linseed oil will add weight and a tiny amount of body. You can do both, with the end result being a heavier, smooth rope that'll cut wind and still stand up for heeling bigger animals. I have videos showing both processes.
